With Tulipan, London-based studio Industrial Facility has created a piece of furniture that offers a soft enclosure. Tulipan’s footprint and mass are surprisingly small – no bigger than a small table. To enter such a micro-quiet space, half of the walls of Tulipan rotate with the seat. With the door made less explicit, there become a much less formal transaction between the inside and the outside. Instead of the practicality of an existing typology like a telephone booth or a meeting room, it’s a tiny space that feels generous. It’s enclosed and partly open, a hard shell with a soft centre.

About the designer
Halle2
+Halle

Based in Denmark, +Halle believe that the future of furniture lies in spaces that adapt to the behaviour of the people who use them; meaning that the design needs to achieve a synthesis of context, function and performance.
+Halle are motivated by the transformation in the use of public space: how people relate to large shifts in work, mobility, technology and privacy. Driven by understanding how spatial cultures evolve, +Halle are interested in the complex, diverse interplay between human behaviour, design and architecture.
It is time to think beyond the generic domestic influence on our public spaces; instead, we really should look at the actual needs and let purpose inform our environments.

Designed By
Industrial Facility

London-based studio Industrial Facility was co-founded in 2002 by designers Sam Hecht and Kim Colin. Their approach reflects both a thoughtful consideration of form and a unique understanding of contemporary life, creating beauty out of utility in the products, furniture, and exhibitions they design. Hecht, from London, trained as an industrial designer, while Colin, from Los Angeles, trained as an architect; together they have helped clients to produce projects that display an understanding of cultural relevance and commercial success.
